On July 7, Ambassador Cui Tiankai talked about the upcoming 5th China-US Strategic & Economic Dialogues (S&ED) during an interview with major Chinese news agencies based in the Untied States.

Ambassador Cui said that as agreed by the two sides, the 5th S&ED will be held on July 10 and 11 in Washington DC. President Xi Jinping's special representatives, Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi, will co-chair the dialogues with Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Treasury Jacob Jew who represent President Obama. This round of dialogues will be another major high-level exchange between China and the United States after the successful meeting of the two Presidents at Sunnylands, California. It will also be the first S&ED for the four new special representatives.

Ambassador Cui pointed out that the S&ED mechanism is designed to focus on the over-arching, strategic and long-term issues that are critical to China-US relations. The previous four rounds of dialogues had yielded fruitful results and played a unique and significant role in the development of China-US relations and the high-level strategic communications between the two countries.

Ambassador Cui said that China-US relations were off to a good start following the government transition in both countries. In particular, the two Presidents agreed to work together to build a new model of relationship between major countries of China and the United States based on mutual respect and win-win cooperation, which set out the course for China-US relations. At the next stage, the two sides need to work together to translate this commitment into concrete policies and actions, and take firm steps to push forward this unprecedented and inspiring cause.

Ambassador Cui stressed that the 5th S&ED takes place under such a backdrop makes it highly relevant with far-reaching implications. Senior officials from over 20 departments on each side will participate in the dialogues. The topics will cover political, security, economic, financial and many other issues on bilateral, regional and global fronts. There will be a Joint Opening Session, the Strategic Track and Economic Track as well as the third Strategic Security Dialogue, the first meeting of the Cyber Working Group and many sub-dialogues. The Chinese side hopes to take advantage of this S&ED to further follow up on the agreement reached by the two Presidents, bring the spirit of mutual respect, win-win cooperation, no conflict and no confrontation into every aspect of China-US relations, and deepen mutual trust, expand cooperation and manage differences with a new mindset and concrete actions, so as to ensure the sound and stable advancement of China-US relations in the coming months and beyond.
