On April 27, 2019, Minister Xu Xueyuan held a barbecue event for Chinese students from the two sides of the Taiwan Straits. Up to 30 students from University of Maryland, Georgetown University, Catholic University and other institutions as well as diplomats from the Chinese Embassy participated in the event.

Minister Xu made a welcome speech. She encouraged students to carry forward the great spirit of the May Fourth Movement, i.e. patriotism, progress, democracy and science, to cherish the ever-lasting love for the family and the nation, and to improve themselves, so that they would contribute their own strength in the process of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and serve as a bridge between the Chinese and American peoples.

The students exchanged views with the diplomats on current China-US relations and cross-Straits relations and shared their experiences and future plans. The participants expressed appreciation for this event as it helped them enhance mutual understanding and friendship.
